FLORIDA THE WAY IT USED TO BE
Growing up in the early 70’s in my youth years visiting Florida was an adventure. We looked forward to the magical moment when we arrived at the Georgia and Florida State line. My fondest memories were being mesmerized by the exotic palm and fruit trees. The air was humid and was warm during the summer months. We enjoyed riding in dad’s convertible. The warm sunshine and breeze was blowing in our faces. Arriving in the early evening hours in Daytona Beach was exciting. We were welcomed by colorful neon signs and tiki torches. The hotel’s exterior was exotic and had tropical landscaping. Tiki parties and themes were popular during the mid-century.
Coming from the North and seeing all the lights were magical to any kid. Souvenir shops and strip malls lined the main beach road. Hotels were on both sides of the two lane road. The bright lights made it feel extra special for vacationers. Lights, palm trees, relaxing on the beach were all signs of a perfect vacation.
Fond Memories Of Daytona Beach
In years’ past, vacationers would drive their car right on the sandy Daytona Beach. The beaches were very wide extending forever in either direction. The seagulls, salty air, and sand to build castles are my fondest memories of Old Florida. Today computers, cell phones, and social media dominate the free-time in today’s society. Life was simple walking along the beach to pick up seashells or look for birds and water creatures. Watching the waves reaching the shore or jumping on a floating raft to ride the wave were hours of fun without the need for any gadgets.
